DENTAL HYPNOSIS

There are many applications of hypnosis in dentistry. A large percentage of patients are anxious and fearful concerning dental work, some to the point of being phobic. Hypnotherapy prior to dental work, self-hypnosis training, and naturalistic (informal) hypnotic procedures may all prove calming for the patient. Some patients may benefit from the use of hypnotic analgesia to reduce the need for chemical anesthetic agents, along with their risks and side effects. Hypnotic analgesia may prove particularly beneficial when medical conditions and allergies preclude the use of chemical anesthetic agents. Hypnosis can be used to promote vascular control to control bleeding among hemophilia patients.

Since stress seems to be a prominent etiologic variable in both bruxism and TMJ, hypnotic approaches such as relaxation training, reduction of anxiety, and the abreaction of emotions (e.g., anger) can often prove very beneficial. Hypnotic suggestions may also be extremely effective in working with hyperactive gag reflex, thumbsucking, nailbiting, tongue thrusting, and in adjusting to dentures.

Individuals have varying degrees of hypnotic responsiveness, but if the above conditions exist, hypnosis is often a helpful adjunct. For more information call (801) 277-3620.
